Course Description

On the first day of this class we will begin our field trip at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Visitor Center and travel Hawaii 11 ninety eight miles to Kailua-Kona. The route will take us along the southern coast of the island where we will stop to discuss the Kau Desert, the Ninole Hills, and Puaulu Beach Park where we will have lunch on the black sand beach. We will then visit South Point, the southernmost point in the United States. From South Point we will travel north with stops at Puuhonua o Honaunau National State Historic Park and Kealakekeua Bay where Captain Cook met his demise. We will overnight in Kailua-Kona. On the second day of the class we will meet in Kailua-Kona and travel northeast on highway 190 and 220 to the observatories atop Mauna kea at an elevation of over 13,000 feet. Our route will include stops at cinder cones, glacial features, Lake Waiau and a tour of the observatories.
