Course Description

Any study of American Criminal Justice must begin with an understanding of its structures and functions. Thus, Intro to Criminal Justice is a study of the system and its component parts. Major emphasis will be placed on police, courts, and correctional components of the CJ system. The course will emphasize how the legal concept of Due Process supports the entire American justice system. A basic review of landmark US Supreme Court decisions will help explain many of the ideas mentioned above. Throughout the course, students will learn many of the basic words and terms used in the CJ system. At the completion of the course, students are expected to have an understanding of the structure and functions of law enforcement, courts, and the correctional systems, respectively. This class is completely online and will include multiple interactive tasks to test understanding. These tasks may include brief projects, quizzes, and written composition.
